I'm BAAACK...

and boy did I miss my littles!  I had a wonderful time reconnecting with a friend but so happy to be back in the classroom.  I got great reviews from the sub and specials teachers...WAY to GO Buck-A-ROOS!

So...today we started our 6 workstation rotation!  This is part of reader's workshop. When we finish with our mini lesson and independent reading and responding we will head to our station for the day! Each station is literacy based and has different leveled activities for the students to work on based on need/interest.  The stations are open ended so they never end!
Here is a sneak peek:

I love the level of noise in our classroom. Students are sharing, working together and helping one another.  You can see that we are reading/writing and working with letters and sounds at all of our stations.

READING:
We talked about SCHEMA.  This will be a word we refer to all year.  Schema is what you already know about something and using it to help you comprehend what you are reading. My littles we so amazing that after reading our GREEN poem they started telling me things that were green!  HELLOOOO perfect lead into schema!! Tomorrow we will talk about where our schema comes from.  How do they know things! This will lead us to some predicting skills!

HERO:
Today after lunch we started our H.E.R.O time. (Helping Everyone Reach Onward)  This week we are rotating all classes and getting to know all of the K teachers.  Later on this time will be used to enrich your child's learning.

MATH:
Today was ZERO the HERO day and he did not disappoint! Fruit Loops left on our table spots! How does he do it????
We are talking about comparing sets.  Once again we used some schema to help us. We had 3 bears and everyone knew that Goldilocks saw 3 bowls of porridge.  When we put one bowl in front of each bear we said the sets were EQUAL (the same).  Then there were 3 chairs. Once again the sets were EQUAL.  AND there were three beds the sets were EQUAL yet again.  BUT when the bears returned from their walk. They found ONE bowl of porridge had been eaten leaving only 2 left.  There were MORE bears than porridge and LESS porridge than bears.  Same thing with the chairs and the beds.
Then the littles went off in pairs to give it a try on their own!

Please use this type of sentence structure around the house when comparing numbers of things!!! We did have some EQUAL sets and the littles said, "___ is equal to ___"!   I love that even during day one they were self correcting themselves!

APPLE FUN:
Today we talked a little about Johnny Appleseed.  We walked through a biography about him. I asked why they thought I would read that kind of book (review from last week) and SURE enough someone said, "To LEARN about him."  My little sponges!
